Embracing JOMO: Finding Peace in Professional Life

I recently had a conversation with a professional colleague about the constant fear of missing out—commonly known as FOMO—that often comes with being a solopreneur. It’s that nagging feeling that every connection, discovery call, or networking event could lead to a breakthrough opportunity for my business. The pressure of always being in the chase can leave little room to appreciate the present moment, which is essential for feeling fulfilled by our accomplishments so far.

She recommended a book about a mindset called JOMO— the Joy of Missing Out—which encourages us to embrace the positive side of passing on certain opportunities and finding contentment in the moments we choose to let go.  If you’ve ever experienced FOMO in your business or personal life, I encourage you to join me as I dive deeper into this topic and explore the benefits of embracing the joy of missing out.

What is JOMO?

JOMO stands for “Joy of Missing Out.” It’s a mindset that encourages embracing the positive aspects of stepping back from constant busyness, social events, and opportunities. Unlike FOMO— the fear of missing out, which centers on the anxiety of potentially missing something—JOMO promotes finding joy in prioritizing personal well-being, peace, and quality time.

It’s also about appreciating the moments when you choose to say no to business demands, creating space for reflection, strategic planning, and a deeper sense of fulfillment in your work.

What are the Benefits of JOMO?

You might think that passing up opportunities comes at a cost, but there are actually many benefits to embracing a JOMO mindset.

  • Reduced Stress and Burnout. Taking a step back from the pressure of constantly chasing every opportunity can lower stress levels and prevent burnout in your career or business.
  • Improved Focus and Mental Clarity. Saying no to distractions and unnecessary commitments allows you to focus on the projects that matter most.
  • Increased Productivity. With fewer obligations and interruptions, you can focus your energy on high-quality, efficient work.
  • Greater Fulfillment. Projects that align with your goals and values create a deeper sense of purpose and satisfaction in your professional life.

Why Do We Get Stuck in the FOMO Mindset?

It’s not uncommon to find ourselves stuck in the FOMO mindset. Behavioral health experts point out that our culture of “constant pursuit” keeps us relentlessly striving. We’re conditioned to chase success, achieve goals, and measure ourselves against ever-changing standards. This mindset keeps us in a constant state of “becoming,” making it feel as though satisfaction is always just out of reach.

We’re constantly bombarded with messages that we must continually improve and excel in order to be content, which feeds into the fear that we’re not doing enough.

How Can We Shift from FOMO to JOMO?

Shifting from a FOMO to a JOMO mindset requires thoughtful reflection on our values and the professional life we wish to create.

Define Your Priorities

Reflect on what truly matters to you, both personally and professionally. For me, my passion lies in expanding access to diabetes care and education. By understanding my core values, it becomes easier to say no to opportunities that don’t align with my goals.

Author and psychologist Angela Duckworth writes in detail about the power of identifying a guiding light—or “North Star”—to ensure that every action we take is aligned with the greater vision we have for ourselves. If an opportunity isn’t aligned with your higher-level goal, let it go. 🎶

Set Clear Boundaries

Recognize the importance of boundaries in maintaining work-life balance. Saying “no” to certain events or tasks allows you to conserve energy for what truly matters.

Personally, I had to get serious about this when my little one arrived. Designating specific blocks of time for different projects or personal versus professional commitments has helped me show up at my best.

Be Present

Focus on the moment you’re in rather than constantly chasing future opportunities. Practice mindfulness to fully engage with what’s in front of you and appreciate the present.

Setting some parameters on social media use, especially LinkedIn, was key in helping me embrace the present. Comparison truly is the thief of joy.

Trust in Yourself

Trust yourself to make the right decisions. When you listen to your instincts, you become more confident in choosing what aligns with your priorities, giving yourself permission to step back from distractions.

In my own journey, self-trust has helped quiet some of the internal noise associated with imposter syndrome and the need to constantly seek external validation—but I’m still a work in progress!

"Let it Be Enough"

By shifting from FOMO to JOMO, you create space for more intentional choices, greater satisfaction, and a sense of peace in both your life and work. At the end of the day, whatever you’ve accomplished, acknowledge it and give yourself permission to “let it be enough”.
